Well the past few days have been really busy, we really haven’t stopped doing stuff from 9 AM until 6-7 PM, and even after that a lot of the evening and night is spent doing house chores. Jason told me something when we first got here and it’s so true. He said in the US we spend about 10% of our day living, by living I mean, showering cooking, cleaning, all the essentials. Here he said we’re going to spend at least 35% of our day living, just because everything isn’t right there, we have to go fill up a bucket to take a shower, we can’t just stand under the shower-head, things like that. Everything requires more time.
Ok so time to back up and talk about my days, Tuesday I woke up around 8:00, had my devotions (I’m finally getting into a pattern), I’m doing my devotions out in my hammock every morning, I’m reading through Exodus. Tuesday I was reading about the Israelites just after they had left Egypt. I never realized how much they complained, and how small their faith was. They couldn’t look back and see how He had gotten them this far, they only cared about the present. It made me gracious in realizing how far he has brought me, from introducing me to this opportunity, to helping me raise funds, and everything in between.
Well I think I spend enough time on my Tuesday morning devos. We spent most of Tuesday morning, from 9-12 out at the property (what one day will be a soccer center) and drew the layout of two of the three huts that will be built for various living accommodations. We then went home and had lunch and lived until 4:30 when we went to the field to get ready for practice. Coaching on Tuesday went well, I am going to be splitting the responsibility with Coach H, who is from Senegal and really knows what he’s doing. I’m really looking forward to working with him.
Wednesday was a pretty miserable day. First of all Derek got really sick from the spaghetti we had Tuesday night, and was running back and forth from the bathroom all night. Neither of us got much sleep. We then had to meet Jason at his house to go out and water the field. Derek said he felt ok, so he drove his motorbike over to Jason’s and I took my bike. We got there at about 9:10 and Jason told us to load up the truck (Land Rover) with hoses and a TV for our colleague to hook up so we could watch the game tonight, and then he wanted 5 long thick branches that were already cut down, to eventually use as fence posts for the property. We drove out to the property to pick up the pump and waited for about an hour for the guy to show up with the keys. We finally got the pump in the car, but it then took us about 20 more minutes to leave, (Jason is a big talker, haha) We got to the field around 11:30, and Jason dropped us off with the pump and hoses, and said he had to run into town to pick up a connector piece, for two of the hoses, he also left his 5 year old son with us. So I connected the hoses, Derek at this point was just laying on the ground trying to keep a 5 year old full of energy from running off, he was really sick, I felt really bad for him. We got the hoses connected in about 15 minutes and then sat and waited for Jason while keeping an eye on the 5 year old. Jason came back around 12:45, and we got the rest of the hose hooked up. Jason then called one of the other coaches to water the field. He had 15 years of experience as a cocoa and potato farmer, so we left him to do that for the afternoon (I was really glad he came, because I was exhausted). We dropped Derek off at the house and he went to bed, then Jason drove me back to their place to get my bike.
On my way home I picked up some stuff for Derek, like bread, sprite, and bananas and then spent the rest of the afternoon filtering water, cooking lunch (rice which didn’t take long) and by then it was about 3, thankfully practice got cancelled due to the African Cup game, so I didn’t have to go to practice at 4:30, but I went to watch the game at 6 at our colleagues house, there were two really nice goals scored, one by each team. We then went home and I got online and tried to skype with mom and dad, unsuccessfully. I finished off the day watching The Fellowship of the Ring, or at least part of it, I skipped from when they had just left the Elf city, to the last battle of the movie and their first encounter with Orcs. I finally fell asleep around 12.
Not sure what the plan is for today, Jason was gonna have us go out and water the field again, yea it’s pretty dry, but we told him to call if he needed us, and he hasn’t called yet (It’s 9:25). I really hope we can just stay in today until practice, but we’ll see.
Blessings,
Mark
P.S. It's 10:15 PM now, I wasn't able to stay home all day but was able to for the morning, I then went out and put nets up on the goalposts while they watered the field. We then had a coaches meeting at 3, which was pretty cool, we talked about a lot of things. Practice went really well at 4:30, and now I'm back here... typical day.
The House Derek and I live in. Notice the cemented in Patio on the front.
